Small Swing Motor Leak, Big Repair Bill

A small oil leak from an excavator swing motor may seem like a minor problem. Some operators keep working as long as the upper structure can still rotate. However, delaying inspection and repair can allow a manageable fault to develop into serious internal damage—and turn a small repair into a complete swing motor replacement.

How a Small Leak Can Become a Major Failure

Not every oil leak leads to internal damage. The risk depends on the leak location, its cause, operating conditions, and the condition of the hydraulic system. The problem is that continued operation without proper diagnosis can allow the original fault to worsen.

1. A minor leak is left untreated

A leak around a seal, joint, or housing may initially require only seal replacement or another localized repair. But if the source is not identified correctly, the leak can continue, and the underlying problem may become more serious.

2. Internal wear continues to develop

If the motor already has excessive internal leakage, abnormal clearances, or damage to its rotating group, continued operation can reduce performance and accelerate wear. Operators may notice weak or slow swing movement, unusual noise, excessive heat, or inconsistent rotation.

3. Critical internal components become damaged

In an axial-piston swing motor, the pistons (plungers), cylinder block (barrel), and valve plate work together to convert hydraulic energy into rotation. Contaminated oil, inadequate lubrication where applicable, abnormal operating conditions, or continued operation with damaged components can contribute to wear on these precision surfaces.

Once the pistons or cylinder block are severely worn, or the cylinder block and valve plate sealing surfaces are badly damaged, replacing a seal alone may no longer solve the problem. Extensive internal repairs or replacement of the complete swing motor assembly may be necessary.

Warning Signs You Should Not Ignore

  Pay attention to these symptoms:

  • Oil leakage: Fresh oil around the shaft seal, housing joints, or hydraulic connections.

  • Weak or slow swing: The upper structure rotates more slowly or struggles under load.

  • Abnormal noise: Unusual knocking, grinding, or other noises during swing operation.

  • Excessive heat: The motor or surrounding components become unusually hot.

  • Worsening performance: Swing movement becomes inconsistent or the problem progressively gets worse.

These sympt oms do not automatically confirm swing motor failure. Hydraulic supply, control valves, brake-related components, and other parts of the swing system may produce similar symptoms. Proper diagnosis is essential before replacing parts.

Repair Early to Avoid Unnecessary Replacement Costs

When a leak appears, do not rely on topping up hydraulic oil or tightening connections without identifying the cause. A practical inspection should include:

  1. Locate the leak and determine whether it is external or associated with excessive internal leakage.

  2. Check hydraulic oil level and condition, and inspect the relevant filters and system for contamination.

  3. Test swing performance and relevant pressures according to the excavator manufacturer's service procedures.

  4. If internal damage is suspected, inspect the pistons, cylinder block, valve plate, and other affected components before deciding whether repair or replacement is appropriate.

The earlier the fault is identified, the more likely it is that the repair can remain limited to the components actually affected. If the rotating group has suffered extensive damage, a complete replacement may be the more practical option.

Final Thoughts

For excavator owners, repair workshops, and parts dealers, the lesson is simple: do not ignore a small swing motor oil leak just because the machine is still working. Early diagnosis can help prevent progressive damage, reduce downtime, and avoid turning a relatively small repair into the cost of a complete swing motor assembly.

When replacement is necessary, always confirm the excavator model, serial number where applicable, and swing motor part number before ordering. Correct compatibility matters just as much as the replacement part itself.
